Artificial photosynthesis to make the building blocks of green plastics
2024-04-30
Fumaric acid -- a key building block in biodegradable plastics -- is commonly produced by oxidizing furfural with chlorate in the presence of vanadium. To reduce the green plastic industry's dependence on petrochemical precursors, researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan have created an artificial photosynthesis technique that synthesizes fumarate from carbon dioxide and pyruvate, two simple and abundant molecules.
